  • Creation of two gametes with haploid chromosome content (the gametes are genetically unique)

  • Only occurs in eukaryotes
  • Two stage process
  • Meiosis I: First stage is similar to mitosis and involves a prolonged prophase
    • At one point (pachytene), chromatids of the chromosomes exchange material (crossover) further ensuring random assortment of paternal and maternal homologues

    • Anaphase I is the most error prone phase
  • Gives rise to gametes that contain only one representative of each homologous pair of chromosomes
