Heparin

  • Unfractionated heparin: potentiates antithrombin which inactivates thrombin and factor Xa; also inhibits platelet aggregation
  • Low-molecular weight heparin (shorter fragments): preferentially affects factor Xa
  • Side effects:
    • Bleeding
    • Thrombocytopenia (may cause paradoxical thrombosis)
    • Osteoporosis
    • Hypoaldosteronism and hyperkalaemia
